Greetings, I'm trying to better understand the purpose of this particular Temp folder (Users/(user name)/AppData/Local/ Tempwithin Vista (ultimate). More specifically, which computer operations, functional routines, application file related activities, or other executions would place files in this folder? The question is prompted by finding this Temp folder populated by a batch of Microsoft Word and PDF files which were created long ago and have resided for the most part untouched in the original 'saved to' directory ever since.

They happen to be sensitive files and I'd like to understand what may have caused them to be copied into this folder. (I'm operating a relatively new computer to which all application files were transferred over from old system running XP and older version of Office Pro. The file transfer process went well with all the document directories, folders, and files organized and working on new system as they had on prior one. The Temp folder files in question were created on old system months to years ago.) If some could refer me to reliable, applicable informational resources, that would be helpful too - in addition to whatever direct response to the query might be possible. Thank you - Sincerely, Howard. Description: Temp folder Location: C: Users AppData Local Temp Why you care: Lots of programs need a safe place, where the user has permissions, to dump temp data. This is the place to look.

They may have wiped/shredded the main file, but there could be a version in this directory depending on how the application works. Entry by: Irongeek, but thanks to Nir.

Information appears in this folder most often when a program crashes and parts of the open files are moved to this directory - it it is very large, then you may be having a lot of crashes. What are the dates on the temp files and are they complete files or just file fragments (you can tell by trying to open them and see if they do if they have valid file types)? Did they all occur at approximately the same time or did they occur over a longer period of time? I don't know why these files would suddenly appear in the temp folder if they haven't been used in 10 years - I can think of nothing in Vista that would cause that to happen automatically. Perhaps someone actually did open them without your knowledge (though it would have to be an administrator to gain access to the source files unless they knew your username and password). Open the Documents folder (the source of these sensitive files) and click on the titles bar and then click on more. Check Date Accessed.
